Although the rug is what you see on the surface, there is much more that goes into the actual installation process. As you can imagine, a rug is not simply laid on top of the concrete or wood that is already in place. While this could be done, it is not something that you want to do if you want the job completed the right way. When it comes down to it, the rug pad that is used is just as important as what you see on the surface. If the correct rug pad is used, you will recognize this in a number of different ways. Of course, if the rug pad is left out, or a low quality option is used, you are going to notice this as well; just not in the same way.
Makes your rug safer to walk on: The right pad will prevent slipping. If you choose one that has a grip to it, it makes the rug much safer to walk on. You certainly do not want anyone slipping on an arearug and taking a fall. Slippery floors such as linoleum and hardwoods can create a real fall hazard when an area rug is put on them with no pad to grip the floor.
Another important function of a rug pad is to find one that will work on top of carpet flooring. Putting a rug on top of carpet is very common. But rugs tend to move and buckle a lot when over carpet. We looked at all of the rug pad types and found the best rug pad for using over carpet is the rubber backed felt rug pads. The installation needs to be the reversed from when using with hard surface flooring. To properly install over carpet, put the felt side to the carpet and rubber side of the pad against the rug. It is amazing how effective this product is for using over carpet.
