If you're not expecting any kids then the sky is the limit. Feel free to go just as creepy as your little heart would desire because there are no limits at this point. You can find everything from demons hiding behind headstones to scary skeletal corpses in coffins that roll about to zombies that actually twitch. You might decide to dress up a particular section of your home or party area with specific Halloween wallpaper with dungeon walls on them, or even wallpaper showing creepy Halloween themes. Hairy spiders hanging from lamps or ghosts hung from the ceiling can add an extra factor as well.
Murals: Let your kids go crazy by painting a huge Halloween mural or banner. Buy a large piece of white cloth or even a white bed sheet and allow them to use paint or markets to create something your can display along your wall or even in your front yard. Allow your kids to be creative or, if your children are still young, outline the words "Happy Halloween" or "Trick or Treat" in big, black letters so that you've created a big coloring book page for them to color.
Window Dressings. Turn your windows into Halloween hallmarks with simple black poster board and a little creativity. Cut out designs of witches, ghosts, and other Halloween figures (pumpkin carving kits have excellent templates) from a full sheet of poster board. Tape the sheet over the inside of your windows, when you turn your lights on inside, they illuminate the cut out to show your spooky creations to passersby.
