Style may not be everything to a 5 year old, or at least not what their parents think of as style, but looking the part and having things that they like certainly are. Fortunately, designs of kids furniture and kids room accessories are available in as baffling an array as clothes, books, and other items for kids. Benches fit for royalty can be introduced into games and will make your child or children feel extra special. Firemen, sports, animals, and fairies are just some of the other items that might be found on the design of kids room accessories.
You can find ways to keep everybody happy, and still not spend a fortune on decorating. A good idea is to have a few ideas that you like, and that coordinate the child's room with the rest of the house, and then let the child pick out of those options. In this way, the child still feels he has a say in how his room is decorated, and you will have a room that you like and that goes with the rest of the house. One of the most important considerations in decorating a kid's room is that it must be a room that is as simple as possible and easy to keep clean. This means that accessories should be kept to a minimum so that there is less to dust and vacuum. You should also try to keep the furniture at a minimum, since there will be less space for clutter to gather.
If you are starting a room from scratch and furnishing a nursery for a new baby, it may be tempting to go for the full-on coordinated look available from high-end stores. Changing tables, cribs and and dressers, complete with matching rugs, curtains and wallpaper may be the ideal solution for the first few years, but they are expensive, soon outgrown and, when the design choices have already been made for you, they provide little scope for individuality. It is far better (and more economical in the long run) to start off with a few good pieces of basic furniture, plain walls and ceiling, and a simple floor covering. You can then introduce blocks of color and pattern by means of the soft furnishings, bedding and accessories. These can easily be changed and updated, the furniture can be repainted when a new look is demanded.
