Decorating kids rooms can be a fun and enjoyable way to pass the time and it gives you the renewed opportunity to bond with your kids as well. There's no better way to get closer to your kids than by getting down to their level and talking about things that interest them. Decorating their rooms might be the perfect way to do that. But where do you start? If you have more than one child you need to be careful whose room you're going to be decorating first so that things don't get fraught and create added tensions.
If you prefer to incorporate some pattern, there are some great retro-style prints about, featuring cowboy or seaside themes. However, special children's fabrics depicting beloved cartoon characters, super heroes or pop idols, are bound to be their favorite. If you start with out with a simple, classic theme of which your child approves -- nautical, sports, zoo animals, colorful fruit and flowers, little princess or Shaker inspired folk art -- you can share your enthusiasm and build on it together by adding curtains, cushions, throws and new bed linens. The fabric should be hard wearing and easy to care for, as they are bound to get well used, covered in sticky fingerprints.
Designing a kid's room can be a bit difficult; most of my younger clients want ponies (real ones). The question is how do you let them have their input and not destroy the decor in the rest of your home? And how do you make a design that can last through the years? This can be the best experience for the family or a horrible disaster. Having said all that, my favorite clients are children; I love their enthusiasm, pure joy and creativity.
