Many parents like to decorate their kids' rooms with a cute theme. This is probably not a good idea unless money is no object, since kids grow quickly and tastes change. If you don't mind spending a lot on a new theme every few years, that's O.K., but most people can't or don't want to spend that kind of money. Better to have a neutral room so where you don't have to throw the old stuff away constantly. Just look around at garage sales some day. You will see entire rooms of so-called "themes" going for ten cents on the dollar.
Decorating kids rooms can be fraught with tension if you don't handle it properly so if you don't have a preference over the best way to handle this, (providing you don't have more than 2 children) it may be an idea to simply flip a coin in the air and have the kids call out what they want. If you have more than 2 kids, another way to handle it is to tackle the whole decorating process of their rooms at once instead of one by one. Having said that, if this feels like simply too much mess for you, agree with the kids which days will be spent decorating each room and what will be achieved on each of those days so that they can see you sticking to a plan and know that each of them is having the same amount of time and money spent on their room.
Paint is fairly low-priced and easy to transform when you're ready for somewhat assorted. So, go for it and make a bit your child will think of twenty years from now. Painted paneling has a far better look than non painted panel board. In fact, after you paint your paneling, you will see how the room tends to look added precious, elegant and modern . Paint the room in the colors of your son's much loved team. Sports themed rugs, beds, and furniture are another possibility.
