In a traditionally built house, the walls will most often be square, and symmetrical, with doors and windows placed at geometrically straight locations, in line with one another. More contemporary floor plans will usually call for an open space design, in which there are only a few walls, and most of the space flows naturally into itself.
If you really want to have a major impact in your modern and contemporary decor one way to do that is to have an explosion of color. If you have done any shopping for modern decor items you have no doubt seen a lot of white, black and chrome pieces as well as some that are in bright and vibrant colors. The way you use these brighter pieces is as an accent in a room that is more traditionally dressed. This means if you have a room that is painted white, with black furniture, you would choose one area of the room to add an explosion of color. This could be a bright accent table or chair on one side of the room that gives the entire space a splash color and brings it to life.
Are you decorating a small or a spacious room? Large rooms look much better when you have wall accents that are scaled to the size of the room. Large mirrors, tapestries and other artwork can make a single wall the focal point of the room. For a smaller room, it's best to keep the artwork on your walls smaller so that it appears balanced and doesn't overwhelm the room. Think about hanging three related prints above your sofa, arranged in a level line straight across. Always use odd numbers of items, such as groups of 3 or 5 when decorating a wall.
