Once you know what kind of pad you need, you will need to know what size. The pad should be slightly less than the length and width of the area rug. You can usually buy already cut to size pads for most standard sized rugs. In some cases, however, you may find that your rug is a unique size. In that case you would want to buy a pad that is larger than your rug and custom cut it to size.
There are three reasons that using a quality rug pad is important. First off, this goes a long way in making sure that your rug is durable and lasts for years on end. If your rug is simply laid on top of wood or concrete, it is going to wear quickly. And while you may not notice this early on, as time goes by, you will surely be able to tell that your rug is beginning to wear out. To avoid this, make sure that the proper rug pad is used. And if you are not the one doing the installation, you should make sure that you still know what is going on. After all, once your rug is in place there is no possible way to determine with 100 percent accuracy as to if the right pad was used. In fact, the only way that you could do this would be by lifting the entire rug; a process that you probably do not want to get involved with.
When you walk on your antique rug, it encounters a lot of stress against the hard floor. The back of the rug, or the knots, as well as the foundation, need to be protected as best as possible. There are rug pads with holes in them and solid rug pads. In this case, the solid on is best. Moving a step ahead, a solid pad with some sort of texture on the surface is even better. This texture can safely grab your antique rug and keep it from crawling, hence reducing wear.
