For finding pads that do not harm floors, in our experience with the pad industry, the domestically made rubber backed products to include the open mesh and felt products seem to perform best for not harming floors. The felt products without rubber backing are also functional for not harming floors.. The pads that seem to cause the most problems are the PVC products from China. For the most part, we feel, these products will not harm floors. But there have been circumstances we have heard about where they have been blamed for causing harm. In speaking with industry experts about coating PVC, we know that coating PVC is a very delicate process and must be controlled to the exact specifications each time. The curing oven must be set to the proper curing temperatures. The coating speed must be exact every time. The PVC coating compound must be made to the exact same specification each time. Any variance in controlling the coating specifications could cause the PVC coated pad to be too tacky or too dry. Being too tacky is the biggest issue with harming floors as it could stick to the flooring and then there is an issue with how to remove it without harming the floors.
Your rug pads help to soften sound and provide a buffer under your area carpet, as well as helping to prevent them from moving around. When your carpet slides around on the floor it is a serious safety hazard for the young and old alike; pads help prevent slippage. Moreover, rugs that move around and are not aligned with the floor and walls give the room a very shabby look and all your expensive décor can be ruined by an out of place mat. Here again pads are invaluable in helping to keep the rug in place. These pads help to extend the life of an area rug as well as protect carpets and floors. One of the main purposes of these pads is to preserve and protect the carpet.
If you're using an area rug in a room, don't cover your floor completely. Your original floors will make a nice border to your rug. Even when you want to use a large rug, subtract at least 9-12 inches from your baseboards so that some of your flooring will show through. Finally, always use a non-ski rug pad underneath area rugs to prevent movement of the rug. The rug pad should be about 2 inches smaller than the rug so that it doesn't show through.
