I have been restoring and caring for antique rugs for years and have always used one of two pads. The first is a recycled jute pad that is as dense as can be for its kind. This is a 40 ounce weight, which is on the higher quality level of jute pads. This weight means there is a dense compression of fiber per square yard and this is important for protection and resistance. This pad can be used under all antique rugs that do not tend to slide around, mainly room size ones.
Tibetan area rugs originated in the mountain regions of Tibet and just across the border in Nepal. They are carefully hand crafted using Tibetan knots, traditional knots, or a combination of textile weaving methods. They are generally made of the finest natural silk fibers and the softest refined wool. This combination of fibers produces a luxuriantly soft pad with a light catching luminescent sheen to it. Artisans use numerous designs of customary plants that have symbolic meanings like bamboo fronds, forsythia branches, plum blossoms, and cypress trees.
Area rugs are a great way to show your more adventurous side. Bold and colourful patterns may take you out of your comfort zone, but they are a great piece for adding a bit of the unexpected to a room. Still, you'll want to choose colours that blend with other design elements of your room so that even as a focal point your rug ties in with your overall décor.
