Designing a kid's room can be a bit difficult; most of my younger clients want ponies (real ones). The question is how do you let them have their input and not destroy the decor in the rest of your home? And how do you make a design that can last through the years? This can be the best experience for the family or a horrible disaster. Having said all that, my favorite clients are children; I love their enthusiasm, pure joy and creativity.
You can find ways to keep everybody happy, and still not spend a fortune on decorating. A good idea is to have a few ideas that you like, and that coordinate the child's room with the rest of the house, and then let the child pick out of those options. In this way, the child still feels he has a say in how his room is decorated, and you will have a room that you like and that goes with the rest of the house. One of the most important considerations in decorating a kid's room is that it must be a room that is as simple as possible and easy to keep clean. This means that accessories should be kept to a minimum so that there is less to dust and vacuum. You should also try to keep the furniture at a minimum, since there will be less space for clutter to gather.
Decorating kids rooms can be fraught with tension if you don't handle it properly so if you don't have a preference over the best way to handle this, (providing you don't have more than 2 children) it may be an idea to simply flip a coin in the air and have the kids call out what they want. If you have more than 2 kids, another way to handle it is to tackle the whole decorating process of their rooms at once instead of one by one. Having said that, if this feels like simply too much mess for you, agree with the kids which days will be spent decorating each room and what will be achieved on each of those days so that they can see you sticking to a plan and know that each of them is having the same amount of time and money spent on their room.
